Simple Fourth of July Cookies - 5 Ingredient Oreos
Making a holiday treat doesn’t have to be hard! In fact, my go to strategy for creating festive activities is to make it as simple as possible. How do I do this? I find things that I’m already doing and I add a festive sprinkle to it. (In this case, that’s quite literally what I did!) Take a step back and ask yourself, is there a way I can incorporate a fun color or design to this otherwise simple dessert or activity? You’ll be surprised at how easy one little tweak to something can make it feel significantly more special or celebratory.
Homemade Oreos.
They’re a staple around our house! Fun fact: When my husband and I first started dating (at age 16) homemade oreos were the first treat he brought me to say happy birthday! And it was that moment I knew I loved him! :) Okay… okay… not really. But they are actually that delicious! And lucky for me, they’re one of the quickest desserts to throw together. And they always end up being a crowd pleaser.
Sooo… how do I take a go-to, frequently repeated dessert and turn it into a fun, festive, novelty dessert? We add red, white, and blue sprinkles! We actually had already made this dessert last week when I had the idea to add sprinkles and my kids were thrilled! It definitely added some excitement to the night. And I’m sure it will add some patriotic festivity to your next gathering!
With that said, let’s jump right in. First things first, gather the right ingredients. If you’re going for simplicity, you can actually make this recipe with just 5 ingredients by replacing the homemade cream cheese frosting with store bought frosting. It doesn’t have quite the same wow factor in terms of taste. But it will end up being just as cute! And some days, time outweighs taste, so you gotta do what you gotta do!
For the five ingredient recipe, you’ll need:
2 boxes Devils Food cake mix
4 eggs
2/3 c. oil
1 can of cream cheese frosting
Red, White, & Blue Sprinkles
If you’re making homemade frosting, you won’t need the can of cream cheese frosting mentioned above. Instead you’ll replace the canned frosting with the following ingredients:
8 oz. package of cream cheese
1/2 c. butter
2 T. milk
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
4 c. powdered sugar
Step 1. Make the cookies:
Combine cake mix, 4 eggs, and oil in a large bowl. Mix until smooth
Roll into 1 inch balls and cook for 8-10 minutes at 350 degrees. Let Cool
Step 2. Make the frosting: (skip this step if you’re using store bought frosting)
Soften the cream cheese and butter. Once softened, mix well
Add milk, vanilla, and powdered sugar; mix well
Step 3: Assemble and Decorate:
Frost the flat side of one of the cookies (be sure it’s completely cooled first)
Add another cookie to the frosted cookie to create a sandwich
Fill a small bowl with sprinkles. Squeeze your sandwich genthly so that the frosting goes just past the cookie. Touch the frosting down to the sprinkles and rotate until all of the shown frosting is covered in sprinkles
Step 4: Eat and Enjoy!
It’s actually that easy! And it’s simple enough, your little ones will LOVE being involved. Give them their own bowl of sprinkles and turn it into an activity. Let them experiment with covering the cookie in sprinkles. Or, you can let them frost and assemble the cookies themselves. However you decide to do it, you’re sure to create lasting memories and delightful flavors. So, gather your ingredients, roll up your sleeves, and let the baking adventure begin! Happy Fourth of July!
Cheers,
Meg
