Red, White, & Blue Chalk Paint

Let’s be honest… any time my kids are playing with chalk, I always find myself complaining about how much I hate touching chalk. It’s just not my jam! And I KNOW I’m not the only one who feels that way. So when I discovered chalk paint, I was instantly obsessed. It’s easy to make, easy to get bright festive colors, low cost, washes off of concrete just like regular chalk, AND the best part is? I can participate with my kids without having to touch any chalk at all. Win-win! Ready to try it out?

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Water

  • Cornstarch

  • Food Coloring

  • Muffin tin or other container

  • Paint Brush

Start out by whisking together water and cornstarch in a 2:1 ratio. Meaning, you’ll want twice as much water as cornstarch. You’ll want to mix 1-2 Tbsp at a time so that it doesn’t get too hard to mix. If you try to mix more than that at once, it ends up turning into an oobleck type of project and the water and cornstarch have a hard time combining. I like to mix it directly into the muffin tin, so typically I’ll do 4 Tbs. of water and 2 Tbsp of cornstarch in each section.

Once you’ve mixed well, add a few drops of food coloring into each individual container and use paint brushes to mix it all up.

Voila! You’re all set! Have fun painting on sidewalks!

Tip - I wouldn’t recommend sponge brushes for this activity. Tough concrete edges tend to tear those brushes up. I’d recommend something like these.

BONUS -

To make this activity even more on theme, we decided to turn it into a game that incorporated chalk paint and snappers! We used our chalk paint to draw a big circle with a star in the middle. Whoever could throw their popper directly on the star got 3 points. The first ring out got 2 points, and the outer ring got 1 point. The possibilities are endless with chalk paint! I can’t wait to see what you and your crew come up with.

Cheers,

Meg
